How to Play Imposter Word Games: Rules, Tips & Strategies

Imposter word games are one of the best party games you've probably never heard of — until now. Here's everything you need to know to start playing and start winning.

What Is an Imposter Word Game?

In an imposter word game, every player is given a secret word. All players share the same word — except one: the imposter. The imposter gets a different, related word.

Example:

  • Most players see: "Guitar"
  • The imposter sees: "Violin"

Players take turns making statements or clues about their word. The imposter must bluff to fit in. At the end, everyone votes on who they think is fake.

Basic Rules

1. Everyone reads their word privately — no sharing allowed

2. Discussion round: Players take turns describing their word without saying it

3. Voting: When time is up (or everyone has spoken), the group votes on who the imposter is

4. Win condition:

- Civilians win if they vote out the imposter

- The imposter wins if they survive the vote

In Who's Fake?, you can play on one device (pass & play), over local WiFi, or online with room codes.

Pro Tips to Win as a Civilian

1. Give clues that the imposter can't fake

Use specific, narrow clues that only someone with your exact word would know. If your word is "Guitar", say "six strings and a sound hole" rather than "you play music on it" — the latter is too vague and the imposter could bluff it.

2. Listen for vague or generic answers

The imposter is trying to give answers that could apply to many things. Listen for who is being unusually broad or non-committal.

3. Watch reactions, not just words

When others give their clues, watch how the suspected imposter reacts. A slight pause or an expression of confusion can be telling.

4. Build a chain of logic

Don't just accuse randomly. Build your case: "Player 3's clue could fit ten different words. Combined with how they responded to Player 1's clue about texture, I think they're the imposter."

Pro Tips to Win as the Imposter

1. Listen first, then mirror

Let others give clues before you. Use similar but slightly vaguer language. You don't need to be specific — just plausible.

2. Pick the middle ground

Your word is related but different. Try to guess what the civilians' word might be and give clues that work for both. "Guitar" and "Violin" both have strings — lead with that.

3. Accuse confidently

Imposters who act suspicious get caught. Join the discussion, push for a vote, even accuse someone else. Acting like a detective deflects attention from you.

4. Don't overthink it

Often a natural, simple clue beats a clever one. Over-explaining is a red flag.

Common Mistakes

  • Civilians: Voting too early without evidence
  • Civilians: Giving clues so obscure no one can verify the imposter
  • Imposter: Giving the same clue as a civilian (suspicious)
  • Imposter: Staying completely silent (very suspicious)
